Accusing the vice-chancellor of Nagpur University (NU) S P Kane of discrimination against the backward class communities, around 30 officials, professors, senate members, and students gheraoed him.
Agitators from different Ambedekarite organizations gathered at the VC’s chamber on Wednesday following Kane ’s rebuttal of SC/ST panel report and transfer of 24 officials belonging to backward communities. They also raised the issue of NU’s alleged inaction against Central India Institute of Mass Communication and its director Sunil Mishra.
They demanded fair representation in different bodies and committees set up by the university. The representatives further asked the VC to comply with the panel recommendations immediately or they would intensify their protest.
The protesters also warned Kane that they would stage an indefinite dharna in front of the main building if their demands were not fulfilled within three days.
The outfits alleged that the transfers were affected at the behest of Mishra, whom the officials had refused to provide with confidential documents. Such a move would certainly demoralize the officials, who have been working honestly, the agitators said.
They also demanded to hand over the charge of registrar’s post to deputy registrar Anil Hirekhan, pointing out that the panel has observed that injustice was meted out to Hirekhan by denying him the chance to occupy the top post.
