A huge fire, suspected to be caused due to short-circuit, broke out at an under construction building of a hospital on Kingsway on Wednesday afternoon where eight people were rescued and admitted to hospital after they complained of asphyxiation.
Of the eight, six were admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCC) and two to a private hospital. The condition of the two is stated to be critical, who are undergoing treatment in ICU, the police said.
According to eyewitnesses, thick clouds of smoke were seen rising from the building, which could be seen from distance engulfing the entire area in and around the area. The fire broke around 2.30 pm and the police and fire brigade personnel had rushed to the spot. Total eight fire tenders were pressed into service, which brought the fire under control averting a major tragedy. No loss of life was reported in the incident as most of the labourers working in the premises had gone out for lunch.
According to police, the fire broke out at an auditorium in the premises consisting cushion chairs that resulted into huge smoke. All the chairs were reduced to mangle heap of steel after the firemen doused the flames.
Sadar police have registered an offence under relevant sections and are investigating the actual cause of the fire.
