“Advances in Petrology- Future Aspects†a national seminar has been organised by the PG Department of Geology on February 23, at Vanamati Hall.
Petrology is the branch of geology that studies rocks and the conditions under which they are formed.  Petrology has three subdivisions: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary petrology. Petrology utilizes the fields of mineralogy, petrography, optical mineralogy, and chemical analysis to describe the texture and composition of rocks, stated a press release.
Nowadays, Petrologists also include the principles of geochemistry and geophysics in order to have a better understanding about the origins of rocks. Petrology helps us understand the details about the Earth’s crust. In other words in helps us to know more about the history and origin of earth and different changes that took place along course of time.
Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University, Srinagar, Prof. Talat Ahmad, will be the chief guest, whereas Pro VC Dr Pramod Yeole will be presiding over the inaugural function of the seminar.
President, Gondawana Geological Society, Dr Anjan Kumar Chatterjee informed that some of the lectures in the seminar will be delivered by the faculty members of the PG Department of Geology.
