The Catholic community in the city celebrated Palm Sunday today. It is the Sunday before Easter marking the beginning of Holy Week, and the arrival of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified.
Speaking in detail about the occasion, Assistant priest of St Pius church , Mankapur, Father Navneet khajur said, “The sacred Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ triumphant entry into the city of Jerusalem. “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey…â€
“Donkey was the symbol of peace at Jesus’ time therefore Jesus chose it as his ride. Jesus is the king of peace, Messiah whom God appointed for his people,” he added.
Every year prior to EASTER Sunday, Christians affirm this belief with a procession with palm in their hands, singing “Hosanna†on this day.
Palm Sunday is celebrated by the blessing and distribution of palm branches. The branches represent the crowd scattered in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem.
