Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in a report informed that country’s total wireless subscribers had dropped to 1,161.8 million as on March 31, 2019 sacking 21.87 million users over previous month.
Total teledensity in India was 91.86 in February however the numbers were shedded to 90.11 by the end of March.
Mobile subscribers of Vodafone Idea and Bhartiya Airtel were dwindled to 14.5 million and 15.1 million respectively as of march 2019 while Reliance Jio added 9.4 million new users during the period.
According to the officials of the Industry body, Cellular Operations Association of India (COAI) the drop in mobile subscriber numbers in March are a result of consolidation of multiple, unused SIMs and elimination of low usage of connections by operators.
Director General, COAI, Rajan Mathews accounted the fault to a combination of factors such as subscribers with multiple SIMs making a decision to move on to one mobile.
The requirement of recharge to keep the numbers active can be another cause which may have led to discontinuation of connections, he added.
