World Environment Day, celebrated on 5th June each year, has developed into a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on urgent issues from marine pollution and global warming to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime.
Millions of people have taken part over the years, helping drive change in our consumption habits as well as in national and international environmental policy.
In the year 1972, at Stockholm Conference on Human Environment, it was decided by UN General to celebrate World Environment Day and in 1974, first Environment Day was celebrated with the theme – “Only One Earthâ€.
This year’s theme of World Environment Day is Beat Air Pollution, chosen by host country - China, engaging all to change our everyday lives to reduce the amount of air pollution we produce, and thwart its contribution to global warming and its effects on our own health.
On this occasion, Nagpur Municipal Corporation & Green Vigil Foundation conducted Student’s Parliament (Charcha Satra) at Town Hall, Mahal, Nagpur (India), focusing on WED Theme – #BeatAirPollution and other Environmental issues.
Students of various Nagpur Municipal Corporation Schools participated in the program with deep felt concern and zeal. The program included addressing the students on need of celebrating World Environment Day, #BeatAirPollution theme – highlighting air pollution sources, causes, types of air pollution, impacts, Global Warming, Climate Change, urgency to tackle air pollution and ways to combat air pollution.
Green Vigil Foundation presented a skit play on #BeatAirPollution to involve and build up consciousness amongst students towards combating Air Pollution by adopting eco-friendly lifestyles.
Another session included miniature acts by members of Green Vigil showcasing degradation of environment by human activities on themes like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Plastic pollution, Protecting Green Cover , Conservation of Lakes , wherein students were divided into groups and mentored by Green Vigil members to re-do acts with a positive and sustainable approach.
The program was conducted under the chairmanship of Hon. Mayor of city, Nanda Jichkar, who motivated school students to take lead and act to protect the Mother Earth. Prominently present during the program were, Deepraj Pardikar, Deputy Mayor, Pravin Datke, Ex. Mayor  Ashok Patil, Asst. Commissioner, Preeti Mishrikotkar , Education Officer and others.
Introductory remark was given by Preeti Mishrikotkar. The Student’s Parliament ( Charcha Satra) was conducted by Kaustav Chatterjee Founder of Green Vigil Foundation.
Around 150 students, 30 Teachers, Staff of NMC education Dept, members of Green Vigil pledged to #BeatAirPollution by reducing their carbon footprints by adopting eco-friendly lifestyles.
Shubhangi Pohre, Smt. Kusum Chaflekar of Education Department, NMC and members of Green Vigil Foundation namely Kaustav Chatterjee, Surbhi Jaiswal, Mehul Kosurkar, Kalyani Vaidya, Kartiki Kawale, Digambar Nagpure, Namrata Zaveri, Rajat Jaiswal, Chinmay Dhiman, Ruchi Soni, Dadarao Mohod, Abhishekh Vaidya, Krunal Borkar, Indrayani Thakare, Eesha Sagdeo Gautami Thakare, worked hard for the success of the program.
