The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has touched one more milestone in its journey by completing 50 Kidney transplant. With this, the hospital is now planning to set up infrastructure for liver and heart transplant before proceeding with the permission. When all such transplant would start, hospital will take steps to establish transplant unit or center. This information was shared by dean of GMCH Dr Sajal Mitra.
Noted that two days before, recipient Amit Wahane (26) received kidney from his mother(44). He was on dialysis since December. Because he did not have funds, he was fearing to opt the operation. But after the consultation from doctors, he got ready for the operation.
Famous Nephrologist Dr Sameer Choubey said that in every transplant there is a need of different specialised doctors. “If transplant unit will be formed, the number of donation will  go up. For setting the unit at GMCH, first the training is required. As far as the funds are concerned, hospitals get enough support from government. ”
However Dr Mitra said, “GMCH is way to forward than KEM and JJ hospital as far as Kidney transplant is concern. Also, the skin bank which started in Orange city hospital that later closed down, will be transferred up at GMCH.”
Dr Mitra said that two transplants have been done at most, in a month at GMCH. We are trying to escalate this figure to three per month with the increase in man power as well.
“Two operation theaters are being set up for kidney transplant, at Super Specialty hospital. On February 9, 2016, first kidney transplant was done here. Till then, we have performed 50 kidney transplants, among which 45 are live and 5 are cadaver. This has been made possible by outstanding transplant team.”
The Head of Department (Nephrology), Dr Charulata Bawankule said that because of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Health Scheme, the poor people have been able to afford this costly treatment. Through this scheme, patient get 2.5 lakh amount for kidney transplant. “The treatment cost goes above 2.5 lakh comprising the transplant and medicine. At SSH, 39 out of 50 transplant have been done under the scheme”, she added.
