Winthrop Aldrich said, “The price of power is responsibility for the public good†and one thing we all can agree on is that public good, to a large extent, depends on the agriculture of a nation. Agriculture too, like most other industries, works on the continuous supply of electricity.
The two most critical dependencies of the farmers have been water and electricity and the absence of either can stunt the growth of this sector. While there are farmers who can afford electricity 24×7, there are many who cannot and they have to depend on the government for subsidies and other such grants from the government. However, a growing number of farms and agricultural businesses are looking at solar power as an immediate savior they can rely on.
The amount of energy from the sun that reaches each day is enormous. Vidarbha region of Maharashtra gets sunlight round the year which makes the generation of solar energy a formidable option not only in terms of economics but also from an environmental point of view. It also increases farmers’ self-reliance and reduces pollution as well.
MSEDCL has started this initiative through which farmers will be provided electricity every day of the year and this has been implemented from June 5, 2019 already. The government also aims to provide solar-powered irrigation pumps by December 2020, which will definitely help the farmers to a great extent.
Let’s shift our nation towards a cleaner, renewable sources of power- but it cannot happen without the efforts of its citizens. We should all support the government and each other to develop more science-based and natural solutions for a healthy, safe and sustainable future!
