In a joyous and proud moment for Nagpur, Gurudas Raut a talented all rounder from city has been selected in playing 11 for India’s cricket team of differently-abled for the World Cup 2019 to be held in England in August.
In the 16-member physically challenged cricket team of India declared by All India Cricket Association for Physically Challenged (AICAPC), General Secretary, Ravi Chauhan, there are four players from Maharashtra.
Raut is currently working in Indian Air Force HQ Maintenance Command Nagpur. Raut has led Maharashtra and the team has been national champions 15 times and on five occasions were the zonal champions. Raut also did well as captain in South Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The Indian team is named Wadekar Warriors, in honour of the late Ajit Wadekar, noted India skipper and founder of AICAPC. The first game is scheduled on August 5, 2019, against Bangladesh.
The selection committee comprised former India players Umesh Kulkarni, Karsan Ghavri and panel members consisted of Deepak Jadhav, Prasad Desai, Mukesh Desai, Brijesh Solkar and Rohit Jalani.
The team, as announced by AICAPC, is as follows: Vikran Keni (captain), Tushar Paul and Debabrata Roy (wicket-keepers), Kunal Phanase, Wasim Khan, Ravindra Sante, Suganesh Mahendaran, Anish Rajan, Anshul, Ramesh Mantri, Narendra Mangore, Jitendra Nagaraju, Gurudas Raut, Gurjant Singh, Mandeep Singh Sran, Aamir Rather.
