“Crossing over the administrative boundaries is essential and needed for urban and rural areas collectively for sustainable natural resource management.†This was the message that emanated from the daylong deliberations during recently held Stakeholder Consultation workshop organized by Department of Architecture & Planning at VNIT, Nagpur on “Building Urban Rural Partnership for Resilient Future: Nagpur City & Metropolitan Regionâ€.
The workshop was part of the multilateral collaborative project coordinated by the IRDR International Center of Excellence in Resilient Communities & Settlements (ICoE-RCS) at VNIT together with Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Yokohama, Japan, Keio University, Fujisawa, Japan, Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.
Dr. Rajib Shaw of Keio University, Japan in his inaugural speech highlighted the increasing significance of managing natural resources in the face of climate change.
In his introductory remarks, Dr. Sameer Deshkar highlighted the complimentary nature of rural and urban areas.
Dr. Ramnath Sonawane, CEO, NSSCDCL in his address expressed his concern that conventionally urban and rural areas are considered independently and at times as competitors while planning for their development
Chief Guest, Hon’ Mayor of Nagpur city, Smt. Nanda Jichkar acknowledged the significance of collective resilience perspective for cities and their hinterlands. She stated that there has to be a better co-ordination between NMC and the rural local bodies in managing the basic infrastructure in Nagpur city limits as well as the Metropolitan region.
Shri Vishramji Jamdar, Chairman, BoG, VNIT, Nagpur highlighted the timeless endeavor of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) to leverage a holistic development of our Nation by addressing relevant social concerns, engage in a dialogue with society and propagate innovative approaches & technologies through its academic and research engagements.
The invited stakeholders were oriented about various aspects of urban-rural linkages and appraised of the opportunities for partnerships in resource conservation with the help of expert lectures.
Dr. Sameer Deshkar coordinated the workshop proceedings and Dr. Vijay Borghate, In-charge Director, VNIT, Nagpur offered valedictory remarks while vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. V. S. Kapse, Head of Dept. of Architecture and Planning.
