Liver Transplant Unit of Alexis Multispecialty Hospital in association with Association of Surgeons, Nagpur had recently organized a symposium on Liver Surgery and Transplantation at Hotel Centre Point, Ramdaspeth. The event was well attended by 49 key specialists from the field of Organ Transplant.
It is worth mentioning that liver transplant unit at Alexis hospital has managed more than 25 cases of acute liver failure successfully over a period of one year. Out of these 25 patients there were no deaths. With one patient being transplanted, 3 were benefited from continuous renal replacement therapy as a part of treatment and all patients are well on regular follow up. In addition, Alexis Hospital has successfully performed 3 laparoscopic liver resections for liver disease including major resection for liver cancer over the past 6 months under the comprehensive Organ Transplant Program at Alexis Multispeciality Hospital with a dedicated team of transplant surgeons and supporting infrastructure.
The symposium had prominent speakers, Dr. Rajasekhar Perumalla, Director -Hepatobiliary & Transplant Surgery (Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, small bowel), Kauvery Hospital, Chennai presenting on Liver Surgery Insights for General Surgeons along with Dr. Ajitabh Srivastava, Vice Chairman – Liver Transplant Unit, Fortis Hospital, Noida speaking on Laparoscopic Liver Surgery.
Dr. Ajitabh Shrivastava said “Liver Surgery & Transplant requires accurate work up, surgical expertise and good supportive care in a properly equipped centre for optimal outcomesâ€. He also shared the Fortis experience in Laparoscopic Donor Hepatectomy and other cutting edge Laparoscopy Liver Operations. Other presenters for the sessions were Dr Amit Gulhane, Associate Consultant – Gastroenterology and Hepatology presenting on the management of Acute Liver Failure conditions. Dr Niraj Kanchankar,
Consultant – Radiology at Alexis Multispeciality Hospital, Nagpur along with Dr Shahab Sharif skillfully presented on the technical aspects of Liver Radiology.
All the sessions were followed by some very thoughtful questions which were aptfully answered by the experts. In fact every Q & A session was more of interactive nature which added lots of insightful things to that particular session. The entire discussion can be summarised that the patients with liver disorders whether acute liver failure, liver cancer or those needing transplant can be treated in Nagpur itself.
A final session, an interactive Panel Discussion on HCC – Management Options was moderated by Dr Amol Dongre, Consultant – Consultant – Medical and Hematoncology, Hematopoietic Stemcell Transplant Physician from Alexis. Panelist for the discussion was Dr Prakash Jain, Dr Ajitabh Shrivastava, Dr Amit Gulhane, Dr Abhijit Deshmukh, Dr Rajesh Mundada, Dr Abhiram Paranjpe and Dr Rahul Saxena.
