Students of Government Medical College (GMC) Nagpur, have been struggling since the first monsoon showers as the boys’ hostel premises is flooded and even the hostel building has started to fall apart. Similarly, the roof of boys’ hostel number 3 collapsed on Tuesday.
The portion of the roof collapsed near the staircase at the 2nd floor of the hostel. The slab came off with all of the centric material, leaving behind just the TMT bars fixed inside the roof. No injuries were sustained in this incident yet the chances were high as it is a regularly used route by the students.
The fallen slab is at least 10×15 feet and debris are spread all over the stairs till the first floor. According to sources, the Public Work Department (PWD) has taken samples of the hostel building and have already stated that some of the hostels are unsafe for students and the work quality is very poor. Surprisingly, even after complaining about it to the management of the college, only painting has been done in the name of renovation.
Last year during the same season the parking lot and boys hostel no. 7 was flooded where the toilet water reached the hostel rooms. All the belongings of the students were drenched in water.
“The department has still not worked on a proper drainage system and there are high chances that the previous situation may occur this year as wellâ€, said a Shubham Ingle, student of Post-Graduation course and a member of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD).
