After Maratha community in Maharashtra secured reservations in government jobs and in educational institutions following state-wide demonstration, the Brahmins in the state too is seeking reservations on a similar pattern.
Samast Brahman Samaj Maharashtra, an umbrella body of several Brahmin organisations, has decided to launch a state-wide agitation from Nagpur, the hometown of Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
According to the organisation, the agitation would be kicked-off from August 3 with a mega demonstration in Nagpur at Samvidhan Square.
Apart from a reservation in job and educational institutions, the Samast Brahmin Samaj is also demanding free education from KG to PG, honorarium for the priests in temple (like Maulanas in mosques) and formulation of a law to stop the defamation of Brahmins in the country (on the lines of atrocities act).
The organisation had launched a similar agitation in January this year in Mumbai. At that time the protest was called off after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis assured to consider their demands and also fulfill some of the ‘legitimate’ demands at earliest. The association, however, was not satisfied with the assurance as the demand of reservation was not given preferential treatment by Fadnavis. “It is not possible to provide reservation to the Brahmin community based on economic status,†he had said.
According to the Samast Brahmin Samaj a big section of the Brahmins in the state is still backward, in particular children of Brahmins who perform religious duties in the temple don’t have enough money to complete their education, and therefore, they need a reservation.
They have also urged the government to order a survey of the Brahmin community in the state the same way it did for the Marathas through Maharashtra Backward Class Commission to assess how backward the community is in order to get reservation benefits.
The organisation stated, the state had around 90 lakh Brahmins and 70% of them are below the creamy layer, which means they would be eligible for reservation benefits.
