As the city is witnessing water scarcity this monsoon, a review meeting was held by Mayor Nanda Jichkar to discuss various water related issue in the city. During the meeting, Jichkar urged the NMC officials to spread words regarding rain water harvesting and to implement the same in all of the government offices, gardens, playgrounds. She also asked the officials to make the citizens aware of the situation of water scarcity and to make the citizens realize their responsibility, as we are already too late.
During the meeting, experts on rain water harvesting and NGO’s supporting it, were invited to share their ideas on how to start rain water harvesting from a small scale. The experts explained the items required and time consumed during this process. Representatives of NGO presented various ideas and suggestions regarding rain water storage.
Jichkar ordered to form a ‘Save water, Harvest water’ committee that will look after the citizens activities of wasting water. “Rain water harvesting is the need of the hour and it is important for everyone to take up the task seriously†said Jichkar.
“Under the Save Water, Harvest Water committee, set up by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation,  various programs will be carried out for public awareness. There are provisions given in the city’s development plan for a controlled regulation of water and for the storage of roof water, but at the moment no citizen or builder is acting responsible towards the schemeâ€, added Jichkar.
With Nagpur receiving deficit rainfall this year, Mayor Nanda Jichkar have already issued warning against wastage of water and have also provide funds for various water conservation works.
