In a major relief to students hailing from economically weaker sections, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to implement  10 per cent reservation under EWS quota to students seeking lateral entry to the second year of Bachelor of Engineering (BE).
Utkarsha Deshmukh has filed a written petition in the HC. The Bench of Justice Ravi Deshpande and Justice Vinay Joshi approved the petition. As per AICTE norms, 10% seats of total admission capacity of first year of engineering are reserved for direct admission in second year. This year, reservations were given to all the categories except EWS.
Utkarsha had approached the High Court to challenge the government’s decision. The petition said that the government’s move of not providing quota to EWS  is discriminatory. This has violated Article 14 of the Constitution.
After hearing arguments of both the parties and considering the legal provisions, the court ordered the government to implement EWS quota in lateral entry to BE.
