Number of stray dogs at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport has been on rise causing great inconvenience to the passengers. The outer part of the terminal building has become a safe shelter for them. At times dogs even trouble the travelers. Stray dogs are also seen in front of the airline ticket counter.
Sources said that airport employees and many passenger give feed these dogs. Passengers also throw left overs in dustbin which attract the stray dogs in large number.
Interestingly, no efforts are made by the authorities concerned to chase the dogs out of Airport. There is a strict rule in place for people coming to the airport for pickup or drop the passenger. Airport employees warn people seen flouting these norms. However, the employees rarely take interest in driving away the stray dogs.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) too seems to have turned its back towards the issue and no initiative has been taking to catch the stray dogs on airport premises.
NMC’s special van with trained staff to catch the stray dogs has not come to airport for the past several days.
Growing number of dogs has increased the risk of any untoward incident like dog bite at the airport, but it seems that the airport authority is taking this grave problem lightly.
There are CCTV cameras installed on the airport premises for 24X7 monitoring. These CCTVs could prove useful to the airport authority to identify people who feed dogs and instruct them not to throw leftovers at the airport. However, no such instruction has been given so far.
