Handlooms in India have emerged as the largest cottage industry in the country. The weavers create products by using natural fibres such as cotton, silk, wool and Khaadi a quarter of the country’s population is involved in keeping this unique and indigenous practice alive.
It was on August 7, 2015, that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day, which was an initiative by the Government of India to honour and revive the roots of handlooms and thus provide work to weavers.
National Handloom Commissionerate under Union Ministry of Textile has organised a special programme to celebrate this day. Mayor Nanda Jichkar will the be chief guest whereas MLA Vikas Kumbhare will be the guest of honour.
To mark the day expo of handloom products will be showcased at the premises of the new secretariat building. Deputy Director of weavers’ service centre, YK Suryavanshi has urged people to buy handloom products in large numbers to mark National Handloom Day.
