Ground breaking ceremony for Recharge Shaft performed by the hands of mayor
Finally, NMC wakes up from deep slumber and started the process of installing rain water harvesting system at their own office in Civil lines.
The NMC office bearers and officers have always been advising the citizens to install rainwater harvesting systems, but ironically there has been no rainwater harvesting system installed in the head office of the NMC itself. As such people and social organisations have been questioning this paradox.
Ground breaking ceremony for the work of Recharge Shaft was performed at the hands of mayor Nanda Jichkar on Tuesday. Now the water collected over the terrace of the building will be collected in the Recharge Shaft. This will help in enhancement of the water table. Rain water harvesting system is also being installed at new administrative building by the Department of Ground Water Survey and Development.
Deputy mayor Deepraj Pardikar, chairman of standing committee Pradip Pohane, leader opposition Tanaji Wanve, chairman of water works committee Pintu Zalke, chairman of fire fighting and electricity committee Sanjay Balpande, civil works committee chairman Abhay Gotekar, Sunil Agrawal, upper commissioner Ram Joshi, deputy commissioner Rajesh Mohite, executive engineer of water works department Shweta Banerjee and others were present on the occasion.
Senior geologist Dr Varsha Mane said that the water getting collected over the terrace of the building will be led to the ground through a pipe and borewell. This will recharge the ground water. This system of recharging the ground water is called as Recharge Shaft.
The Recharge Shaft should be put to use immediately
Mayor Nanda Jichkar said that this system should be immediately put to use as it will be very useful in this monsoon. It is expected that 15754 cubic meters of water will be collected in the new administrative building. Two Recharge Shafts are being readied. Every shaft will help recharge 7877 cubic meters of water. NMC will install such systems in all the government buildings, big societies and other places.
