Many students could not apply online for PhD Pre-Entrance Examination (PET) of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University because there is no teacher available for their subject in the university. Guides of many subjects already have long queues of students. In such a situation, questions are arising in the mind of the students whether they should take the test or not.
Sources said that because of this reason, this time there has been a decline in the number of PhD aspirants from Inter-disciplinary Branch, Commerce and Management and Humanities. Most applications have come from the students of Science and Technology. Post graduate engineers have filed maximum applications.
The last date to fill online application for ‘Pet’ has ended. The university has not released official figures on the total number of online applications for PET. However, sources said that this time there may be a decrease in the number of candidates appearing for the examination as compared to the previous year.
It is pertinent to note here that the standards set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the university regarding the Ph.D. guide were implemented in the year 2016. As per these standards, the number of researchers for Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor was fixed. At present many assistant professors, associate professors and professors have more than the desired number of research scholars under them, due to which they do not have room for new researchers. Many students are already queuing up waiting for the seats to be vacated. Considering their number, new researchers are planning to go to other universities instead of doing research work here.
Meanwhile, students who are not applying for ‘PET’ said that there is not a single guide available in three subjects in the university. There is only one guide in five subjects. While guides are available in some subjects, they are showing more interest in becoming guides of outsiders (students of other universities) rather than local students.
On contacting the officials of the University Examination Department in this regard, he said that research centers have been started in the affiliated colleges to ensure that the students do not face any problem. Guides are available in these centres.
