After a slab of Poonam Mall in Wardhaman Nagar collapsed on Friday night, killing one person, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has issued a notice to demolish the dilapidated portion of construction area 7142.2 sq mt within 24 hours. The notice was issued on Saturday to Indo Pacific Software and Entertainment Ltd, which is having the lease of the mall.
The firm, holds the land lease, had constructed the mall in Wardhaman Nagar. It also had a multiplex. On Friday night, a portion of the building collapsed. One person died while two others were injured in the incident.
A team of Nagpur Municipal Corporation inspected the building on Saturday morning and it has been observed that a portion of the theatre on the east side of the building has collapsed. The third and fourth floors of this building admeasuring 3571.1 sq. mt would be demolished along with some portion of the second floor. The construction of the area was declared ‘not safe’ by the Municipal Corporation. The notice stated that NMC would take action if the owners fail to demolish the dilapidated portion within 24 hours of the issuance of the notice.
It is pertinent to note here that a watchman on duty at the Poonam Mall in Wardhaman Nagar died as a part of the mall building collapsed around Friday midnight. He had sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Radhakrishna Hospital. However, hospital authorities confirmed that the watchman was brought dead. The deceased was identified as Jaiprakash Sharma.
At the time of the incident, there were some people in a pizza shop in the mall building. They heard loud noise and rushed out of the shop. Soon, they saw a portion of the structure coming down. Four fire tenders reached the spot, and the area around the mall building was cordoned off. The wall of the massive structure developed cracks.
