The state of equipment at Medical is proving insufficient due to an increasing number of patients. While the number of beds is over 2500, they have only 22 ventilators out of which five are not working.
Significantly there is a commotion over ventilators daily. The hospital administration had sent the proposal for purchase of ventilators to the government. Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule got the proposal sanctioned and provided funds of Rs 2.88 cr. Total 25 ventilators for old and young would be purchased.
Presently the ICU has eight, surgery recover ward has three, the paediatric ward has two, while two each at medicine and surgery departments and five in swine flu ward. Five of these ventilators are not working. Daily four to five serious patients arriving at Medical require ventilators. As ventilators are not available, relatives have to press the manual ventilator which is dangerous.
The Medical administration had sent the proposal for purchase of ventilators to the government and Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule was also appealed. He took the issue seriously and arranged funds of Rs 2.88 crores through Nagpur Khanij Pratisthan.
Total 25 ventilators for adults and children would be purchased through the funds and the government recently approved the purchase. The purchase would be through Haffkine BioPharmaceuticals and soon paucity of this extremely important equipment would be over.
New ICU needs 90 ventilators
Construction of new 30 beds each ward of surgical ICU, medicine ICU and neonatal ICU have been completed. Equipment would soon be provided and services would begin. Medical administration has made a demand of 30 ventilators for each ICU totaling 90 ventilators, sources said.
Trauma needs 25 ventilators
Medical has started a trauma care center for serious victims of accidents. However, this 72-bed center has only 17 ventilators. Considering the number of patients, it would require more 25 ventilators. A proposal has also been sent by Medical to the medical education department.
