City lakes are seen having a low level of dissolved oxygen due to the heavy submerging of idols of gods. Every year during the festive season, humongous idols of Ganpati or Goddess are submerged in the city lakes and along with them toxic paints and harmful substances which do not belong in the water get mixed in it. These toxic materials have a chronic effect on the aquatic organisms and especially on their respiratory system.
A study on water quality of all the lakes in the city including Sonegaon, Futala, Gandhisagar, and Sakkardara lake was done by Green vigil foundation. This water quality examination brought up pH value and noticed a temperature change in the lakes, the analyses have also brought up the different parameters including dissolved oxygen and turbidity levels.
Among all the lakes that were examined Gandhisagar had the highest levels of Suspended Solids in it. Also, the highest turbidity was noted in Gandhisagar lake at 75-80 Jackson Turbidity Unit (JTU). Futala Lake is the only lake that has the highest level of water and hence having the lowest level of turbidity.
