Nagpur Municipal Corporation has decided to take a stern action against the sale of POP Ganesh idols which are becoming an obstruction in an eco-friendly Ganesh Utsav. The making of POP idols is dampening the festivity mood as many of the local organisations have raised their voice against the POP made idols.
A meeting was held in the Additional Commissioner’s office at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Administrative Building under the chairmanship of Additional Commissioner Ram Joshi regarding the criteria given to POP idol vendors. Health Officer (Sanitation) along with Zonal officers of all zones were present on the occasion, including Sunil Kamble, Head of the Infestation Team, Virsen Tambe, Green Vigil Foundation founder Kaushab Chatterjee, Surabhi Jaiswal.
The Commissioner had convened an urgent meeting to decide on the matter, after Green Vigil Foundation founder Kaustabh Chatterjee had taken note of Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar saying that the criteria set by the NMC for vendors were not being followed.
NMC has given permission to the vendors to sell POP made Ganesh idol on some conditions. Those conditions are included in the permit letter itself. According to the criteria, the seller of POP idols should have a banner in front of the shop saying that they are selling the POP idols. It is also mandatory to put a red mark on the POP statue.
However, the Green Vigil Foundation has demanded action against the vendors, who are not complying with these rules.
Taking into consideration this demand, from today (Thursday, 29th), all the idol dealers will be inspected and action will be taken against the dealers who are violating the norms set by the corporation in respect of POP idols.
