Dr. Sanjiri Deopujari, 31, a native of Nagpur, and her husband Kaustubh Nirmal, died in boat fire off the Southern California coast, USA. Sanjiri’s father Dr. Satish Deopujari is one of the renowned pediatricians of Nagpur. The medical fraternity of Orange City was shocked by the news that came to light on Wednesday.
According to sources, Dr. Deopujari has left for the United States immediately after getting the news. Dr. Sanjiri and her husband Kaustubh were among the 34 people who were going for scuba diving. They got trapped when the roaring blaze blocked their escape routes and confined them to the lower sleeping deck.
Their total ‘trip’ was three days. The boat was stopped at night near Santa Cruz Island. The boat had a total of 38 passengers and staff. At dawn on September 2, the boat suddenly caught fire. It is learned that all five employees on the boat survived, but the passengers could not.
Sources said US Coast Guard has found some bodies and they would perform ‘DNA test to ascertain their identity. Dr. Sanjiri had completed her BDS from Sharad Pawar Dental College And Hospital. She then went to New York University to pursue higher education. Her wedding with Kaustubh Nirmal was solemnized in December 2016.
Kaustubh was originally from Jaipur and moved to Stamford, where he was working in the finance sector. The two had gone to California for the weekend. In the last phase of the three-day trip, the fatal accident took place and both of them lost their lives. Dr. Satish Deopujari or his family could not be contacted for comment. But some of his acquaintances told that he had reportedly left for the United States. His elder daughter, Dr. Shruti, is also in the US.
