It has been reported that Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde, the eminent jurist, will take the charge as the 47th Chief Justice of India, after the current CJI Ranjan Gogoi’s tenure ends on November 18, 2019. Justice Bobde will remain in the office till March 23, 2021. He was recently elevated to the position of Supreme Court Judge.
Justice Bobde was part of many iconic cases. He was part of a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, which clarified that no Indian citizen without an Aadhaar card can be deprived of government services and subsidies. He was also part of the bench with Justice TS Thakur and Justice AK Sikri that suspended the sales of firecrackers in the National Capital Region in 2016.
He practiced at the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court for more than 21 years.
