The menace of stray dogs is not a new phenomenon in Nagpur. As per reports, now the situation has reached its worst level and the citizens of the city are really scared of this and have created a panic atmosphere across the city. In view of this serious condition, the civic administration has asked the support from animal welfare organizations to carry out the sterilization and anti-rabies vaccination of the strays in city. As per information, 45,000 strays are yet to be sterilized.
Earlier, in September 2017, the NMC has invited the expression of Interest (EoI) for NGOs for conducting animal birth control (ABC) operations in the city. And two NGOs have been appointed for this task. However, as per the sources, only one NGO is conducting the sterilization programme of the targeted 50,000 dogs in the city.NMC veterinary officer Dr.Gajendra Mahalle has stated that after the deaths of the few dogs, they stopped the contract of Nagpur SPCA. At present VFA is performing operations at the ABC centre in Maharajbagh Veterinary college.
As per the last nine months record, ABC operations of around 4000 dogs have been conducted. There is a criteria for conducting ABC operations. The organizations should have well-trained veterinarians having minimum experience of two years. And these organizations will also responsible for giving treatment to sick and injured stray dogs. And civic administration has set up a new ABC centre in Gorewada. Currently, the ABC operations are being performed at animal shelter in Bhandewadi.
