Gondia: Problems at Gondia Government Medical College were unattended until Dr. T.P Lahane, Director, Medical Education and Research, came to rescue after Dr. Sudhir Gupta refused to join as Dean even after his appointment.
Gondia Government Medical College is divided into two parts. One is Bai Gangabai Woman’s (BGW) that treats women and children. For the last four days the delivery operations had stopped in the hospital due to the lack of proper guiding person. The other part caters to the need of patients who need other surgeries or treatment.
According to sources, Dr. Deshmukh who is the head of the department was not attending his duties. Dr. Rajashri Patil, his deputy, refused to work due to lack of manpower. Taking cognizance of the reports, MP Sunil Mendhe and MLA Vinod Agrawal visited the hospital and took stock of the situation.
Mendhe approached Gondia District Guardian Secretary Dr Sanjay Mukerjee and asked the Medical Education Secretary to settle the issue. Acting on the orders by Health Department, Dr Tatyarao Lahane rushed to Gondia.
He conducted a meeting to get the knowledge about ongoing activities in the hospital and resolve the issue. Dr. Lahane was accompanied by Deputy Director of Public Health Dr Sanjay Jaiswal.
During the meeting, Dr Lahane learned that there are 53 posts of medical officers lying vacant since long. Taking quick action on the information he asked Dr Jaiswal to discuss the issue with Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Minister Girish Mahajan and instructed Dr Jaiswal to bring back three medical officers to fill up the posts of 20 posts of medical officers.
Other issues discussed during the meeting was that,only 23 staff members are on duty and delivery operations are being performed. On the contrary,several doctors have either ended their contract or had gone on vacations.
Dr Lahane also took the concerned officials to task as to how they dared to stop the operations. He asked them to improve upon the prevailing conditions.
Following the directions of Dr Lahane, Dr Sayas Kendre, Dr Asha Agrawal and Dr Shital Khandelwal were asked to join BGW Hospital on deputation with immediate effect. District Later, MLA Vinod Agrawal met Directorate of Medical Education and Research Dr Tatyarao P Lahane and Deputy Director Dr Sanjay Jaiswal in the chamber of GMC Dean Dr Vinayak Rukhmode.
He apprised the authorities of the pathetic condition of the government hospitals in Gondia. He raised issues of staff crunch, dysfunctional equipments, unavailability of medicines, etc. MLA Agrawal asked the authorities to improve the conditions and also warned to take on public agitation for the same.
