Everyday million tons of food is prepared for us to eat and hundreds of unwanted food makes its way in the dustbin. On the contrary, the needy people live without food. To tackle this problem people come up with different ideas, donations. NGOs work day and night to provide food and shelter to people in need but the minimum wastage of food is not going to cease.
Coming up with a brilliant idea a group of students Sumit Saboo, Utkarsh Gupta, M Vishnu graduated from VNIT Nagpur has won first prize at HackHarvard Global Hackathon 2019 which was organised by Harvard University, USA last month. This hackathon was focused on creating innovative solutions to the global problems of the society and hence transforming millions of lives.
While speaking to The Live Nagpur one of the teammate Utkarsh Gupta informed about their project “We proposed multiple solutions on how to reduce food wastage globally and are working on a larger goal to zero out food waste across restaurants in India by 2025. We are trying to make people conscious about the unconscious act of throwing food”.
“Around â…“ of the food produced in India got wasted, if we can prevent this from happening we can completely eradicate malnutrition. Water used to produce the food that is ultimately wasted is equivalent to the average size of the river flowing in India” informed Gupta.
“We are happy to win an award for our innovative idea and were the only team from India in the final category and do some good deed to cut down the amount of food wastage in the world we will continue our journey by spreading awareness of why not to waste food by accurately showing users the quantitative impact of their food wastage on the environment by conducting workshops in schools and colleges for young generations so as to change their mindset during their growing age” he added.
It’s not easy to change the mindset of the people but we are sowing the seed in the minds of the people so that one day India can proudly say that we are a nation of 1.3 billion people where no one is going to bed hungry.
