Recently the renowned Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya (MGAHV) Wardha has banned all non-vegetarian food items in the campus. This move from the central university is creating ripples among the students. As per information, this was implemented without a prior notice.
Prof.Manoj Kumar who is the proctor of the university has said that as per the act under which the university was set up items like alchohol, tobacco in any form and non-vegetarian food are not allowed on the campus. He further added that those who wish to savour non-vegetarian food can do so in the privacy of their rooms or even visit dhabas outside the university campus.
According to the students, majority of the students are non vegetarians including many foreigners and the administration has hiked the price of new all veg menu which is creating the problem for the students who are coming from economically weak background.
The students complaint that when the canteens/messes were run by student cooperatives, we paid around Rs.1500 per month/per head for wholesome breakfast-lunch-dinner including non-vegetarian dishes served at least twice a week. Now the university has increased the rates to Rs.2250 with no concession on skipping the meals and privatized the mess/canteens management. Another issue of concern for the students is the way in which restrictions are imposed like ‘big brother watching’ through around 500 CCTVs installed throughout the campus. While the university administration has stated that after getting the complaints from the students they have approached the outside party who can offer best quality food for the students.
