Based on the theme “Excellence in Health Care through Quality and Innovation†The X Annual International Conference of Global Association of Physicians Of Indian Origin (GAPIO 2020) in association with Academy of Medical Sciences Nagpur concluded recently at Kingsway Hospitals Auditorium Complex, Kingsway Hospitals, Near Kasturchand Park.
GAPIO has the motto to improve Health Worldwide. This conference provided a good chance for delegates to have updated knowledge by interacting with the eminent Indian Doctors working abroad.
IT was formally inaugurated by Veteran Physician Dr B. J. Subhedar , who was invited as the Chief Guest while Dr Vikas Amte was the Guest of Honour. Dr Ramesh Mehta GAPIO Chairman, UK, Dr Anupam Sibal Vice President India, Dr R. R. Khandelwal, Org. Chairman, Dr Prakash Khetan, Conference Secretary, Dr Pramod Gandhi Conference Treasurer, Dr Nirmal Jaiswal, President AMS, Dr Sanjay Jain, Secretary AMS, Dr S.N. Deshmukh. And Dr R.P.Mundle Chairman Scientific was also present on the dais.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was also signed with the Academy of Medical Sciences and Kingsway Hospitals for the training of Medicos in speciality fields, by BAPIO & GAPIO. This will open a vista for Fresh MBBS Students of Central India to be trained under 2+ 2 module
On day One,  a pre-conference workshop on “A Young Doctors Forum†moderated by Dr Suresh Chari & Medical Education Workshop where Deans of Medical Institutions participated. “Improving Training and Assessment†“Research & Innovation: Paper Presentation†“Workshop: Medical Apps, Algorithms and Artificial intelligence†USG & XRAY in Emergency, Retinopathy of Premature babies (ROP) Workshop were the highlights of the day.
The second day started early in the morning with a Plenary Session: Diabetes & Endocrinology’. Dr Brahma Sharma, USA showcased “Current Concepts in Management of CVD in South Asiansâ€. Dr Subhash Wangnoo, Head Apollo Centre of Obesity, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, spoke on “Prediabetesâ€, “Steroid Withdrawal†was covered by Dr Vageesh Aiyyar, Senior Endocrinologist, Bengaluru.
Dr Parag Singhal, UK and Prof Mahendra Patel, UK, described “UK Approach to diabetes (Duologue) with special reference to DPP 4 inhibitorsâ€
Dr Shehla Sheikh, Senior Endocrinologist, Mumbai, explained “SGLT2 inhibitors – beyond Glycaemic control†A Presentation “Characterisation of the P301L Mutation in Human Tau in a Transgenic Zebrafish Retinal Model of Frontotemporal Dementia with Parkinsonism (FTDP-17)†by winner of the BAPIO Research & Innovation Competition in London Nov 19 – Dr Ashwin Venkatesh, Cambridge, UK Prof Ged Byrne, Executive Director, Health Education England presented a Guest Lecture: Engagement: ‘Opportunities for India in Global Medical Workforce Crisis’Another Guest Lecture was given by Prof Vinod Paul, Member Niti Ayog and National Medical Council. ‘Role of Professionalism amongst doctors†Prof William Pinskey, Chair ECFMG, USA presented his Guest Lecture: ‘Ensuring the Quality of Education in Medical Schools Globally’
Panel Discussion was moderated by Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Professor of Surgery, and Nagpur on “Bariatric Surgery†Panellists included Dr Mohit Bhandari, Bariatric Surgeon, Indore – Dr Shehla Sheikh, Senior Endocrinologist, Mumbai, – Dr Nikhil Balankhe, Consultant Physician, Nagpur-Dr Mrs Shilpa Joshi, Nutritionist, Mumbai.
Research & Innovation: Paper Presentation was concurrently held in another hall. Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Invited lectures were also organized. Dr Ajit Bhagwat, Aurangabad spoke on “Current status of Antiplatelets in CAD on Medical Management and Post-PCIâ€
Dr Prashant Advani, Raipur, described “Management of Heart Failure†Dr Mahesh Fulwani, Nagpur presented “Guidelines on Lipid Management†while “Management of Acute Coronary Syndrome†was covered by – Dr P. C. Mondal, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi.
In a session on Gastroenterology – A Panel Discussion was held on Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and moderated by Dr Amol Samarth, Nagpur and Dr S D Suryawanshi. The panellists

- Awards to Young Paper presenters were given during the gala dinner. They will be given 15 days internship in UK. Dr.
- Anupam Sibal presented “Why I am a Proud Indian†PAdmashri Dr. M.K. Mani, Senior Nephrologists was given Lifetime Achievement Award by GAPIO.
On the final day, there was Women’s Forum, highlighting Women Doctors and their achievements in career.
The Paediatric forum discussed various medical issues related to Children Gastroentero; Nephrology, Oncology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Respiratory, Gastroenerology, and Obesity.
Neurology session covered “Movement disorders†by Dr Pankaj Agrawal, Mumbai. “Evolution of Thrombolytic therapy in stroke†by Dr P N Renjen, New Delhi. “Effective Prevention of Stroke Recurrence†by Dr Subhash Kaul, Hyderabad Emerging Neuroviruses by Dr C. M. Meshram Nephrology Session covered: “Achievements of past Decade in Kidney Transplant†by Dr Sanjiv Jasjua, Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.“Newer antidiabetic drugs in Management of Diabetic Nephropathy†was elaborated by Dr Ashok Kripalani, Mumbai.
“Current scenario of deceased donor transplantation in India†was discussed by Dr Ravi Mohanka, Transplant Surgeon, Mumbai. Post-transplant immunosuppression was highlighted by Dr S J Acharya, Nagpur. The session on “Oncology†was chaired by Dr Hasmukh Shah, UK, Dr Sushil Mandhaniya. Dr Hemant Malhotra, Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist, Jaipur spoke on “Cancer Prevention in Indiaâ€.
“Cancer screening†was presented by Dr Prasad Narayanan, Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist, Bengaluru. Dr Randeep Singh, New Delhi elaborated “Familial Cancers- role of genetic counselling†Dr Ramesh Bulusu UK spoke on “Precision Medicine in Cancer Treatment in Indian context†Pulmonology session on Tuberculosis was chaired by: Dr Anil Tandon, Dr Sunil Khaparde Newer Modalities in diagnosis of TB was presented by Dr Ranjani Ramachandran, New Delhi. Dr. D Behra, PGI, Chandigarh described “MDR TB- Current Scenario in India and its Management†Dr Ravindra Sarnaik, Nagpur, spoke on “Newer Anti TB Drugsâ€
“Artificial Intelligence-based screening of digital chest radiographs for TB†was Dr Amit Kharat, Pune Guest Lecture: ‘Impact of Ayushman Bharat on Indian Healthcare’ was presented by Dr Praveen Gedam, Deputy CEO NHA And chaired by Dr Anupam Sibal, New Delhi, Dr Anup Marar.
The conference concluded with Valedictory Function, Dr. Praksh Khetan Org. Secretary proposed the vote of thanks. Total above 3000 delegates took part in this GAPIO Conference which is a record in its History and establishes Nagpur’s Importance in Health Hub of Central India.
