‘Right To Protein’, a national level public health initiative, has launched February 27 as ‘India Protein Day’ to raise awareness about the importance of protein in diet for good health. It will be an annual event which will encourage the citizens to know about the importance and sources of proteins and to be aware about their daily consumption of this vital nutrient.
Protein is a very important macronutrient required by our body for growth and maintenance. It is a vital structural component of the body and is also required for various metabolic processes.
Deficiency of protein affects the proper functioning of the body. Rich sources of protein include animal foods, dairy products, pulses, nuts and oilseeds.
Research has shown that Indians consume inadequate amounts of protein. The theme of India Protein Day 2020 is ‘Protein Mein Kya Hai?’, which aims to bring about a behavioural change and encourage people to pay attention to consuming adequate amounts of protein – a quarter of a plate in each meal.
To promote the cause, ‘Right to protein’ has also launched a short video on this occasion.
