A bill to make Marathi language compulsory subject in all schools across Maharashtra was passed on Wednesday by the Legislative council
The Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools 2020 bill was passed in the upper house of the state.
School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad while speaking in the Lower house said that the decision was taken in a mutual understanding with all the educational boards ICSE, CBSE.
Although a bill is first introduced and approved in the Assembly first following which it is given to the Council In this case however the Council Chairman has allowed the concerned minister to introduce the bill in the Upper House first. As per reports, the legislation stated that the schools which do not comply with the provisions of the bill have to pay a penalty up to Rs. 1 Lakh.
Now all schools in the state have to include Marathi language in the academic session for class 1 to 10th from the academic year 2020-21.
