Unseeded Kiran Makode playing for the first time in 50 plus category upset his formidable opponent Murlikrishnan from A. P. in straight games 21-16, 21-16 to clinch his maiden National singles title in Masters Badminton Championship on Saturday.
Kiran started aggressively and took lead of 11-8. However, Murli fought back and narrowed the lead to 12-14. Kiran changed the pace of the game and engaged his opponent in long rallies to win the first game 21-16. The second game saw both players fighting for each and every point.
However, Kiran led narrowly at break time with 11-10. Murli, however, fought back and led 14-12. Kiran, however using all his experience changed tactics and executing beautiful reverse sliced drops followed powerful smashes leveled the score at 14 and raced to a lead of 18-14 and finally wrapped the game and match on 21-16.
Kiran had a very tiring and exhausting tournament having played a total of 16 matches from qualifying rounds en route to title victory. He played a total of 8 doubles matches and 8 singles match. An elated Kiran said ” This victory is yet to sink in. Before leaving for Jaipur I was suffering from a severe stomach ailment and was in double mind whether to compete or not.
However, my parent’s blessings and family’s support made it possible for me. I would like to especially thank my beloved wife Pallavi for having confidence in my ability and motivating me throughout the tournament.
