Amid all the pandemic that the wet market of Wuhan, China has created, the mass stoppage of almost every small scale business, all the economic crisis that is being faced by every country, the Yulin Dog meat festival is again being organised by the citizens.
Consumption of dog meat has always been a part of Chinese cuisine and when the summer solstice hits, an annual festival where dog meat is consumed on a much larger scale than the usual is celebrated in the Yulin city. This festival is very similar to that of Gadhimai, which is held in Nepal. It’s just that the Gadhimai festival has a sacrificial purpose and in which the locals sacrifices cattle, while in Yulin dog meat festival is said to have medicinal effects.
The Chinese believes that consumption of dog meat has medicinal cures and properties. Both the, dog meat and Gadhimai have been criticized on larger scale on the both domestic level and international level.
In a recent social media post, a non profit organisation, People for Animal, revealed that dogs are being smuggled from Assam to Nagaland for the same purpose. As the dogs in Nagaland have all been consumed, the illegal trade of dogs has now started from West Bengal and Assam.
The post also shows some disturbing images and reads, “trucks full of dogs are being taken to Nagaland at night, crossing the border. The mouths of these dogs are tied with ropes so that they don’t bark. Many even die of suffocation.â€
You could put a stop on this illegal trading by writing an email to, Chief Secratary of Nagaland Temjan Toy on the given email.id, csngl@nic.in
