During lockdown, the city witnessed a rapid increase in the sale of rotten betel nuts and flavoured tobacco. As per information, without adhering any food safety rule, local factories have raised their sale of these items.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) District President Shailendra Tiwari met Anil Deshmukh, Home Minister, Government of Maharashtra and informed him about the sale of rotten betel nut and flavoured tobacco in the city. Tiwari demanded ban on sale of such unhealthy products as early as possible. These tobacco items are vulnerable for different diseases like, cancer, goiter, mouth ulcers, high blood pressure, anxiety, sleep deprivation, cardiac issues and much more, he added.
Tiwari also stated that the officials of Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) have connections with these businessmen and manufacturers who are allowing them to continue their business in the market. Hence, Government should come forward and take action against the local administration, officials of FDA and stop the sale of such tobacco items in Nagpur. The minister assured that he will take appropriate step soon to curb the sale of such harmful tobacco items in city. Also assured that he would act against officials who are indulging in encouraging sale of such items in the market.
