The delay in accessing medical facilities is really worrisome and this attitude and approach making things difficult for doctors and other frontline health workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Most patients suffering from critical illnesses with late realisation are reaching hospitals in a bad condition.
Managing such persons has become difficult for the hospitals. Nagpur district, on Monday, has registered 604 COVID-19 positive cases. With these, the cumulative number reached 8,041. With 17 more died of coronavirus the death number mounted to 263.
At the same, 177 got discharged after they recovered fully taking the cumulative recovery to 4,525. The samples came positive were examined at virology laboratory of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) (113), Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) (104), molecular diagnostic laboratory of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) (34), National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) (20), Centre for Zoonosis, Nagpur Veterinary College affiliated to Maharashtra Animal Fisheries Sciences University (MAFSU) (13), private laboratories (75).
One senior officer in health sector stated that If one has a look at the statistics of the persons breathed last, one would realise 95% of those are in the age group of 60 to 80, some though young have several other ailments like diabetes mellitus, respiratory issues, various addictions. These persons otherwise would have survived for longer time are getting serious because coronavirus is aggravating their problems. Tukaram Mundhe, Municipal Commissioner stated that as per the study in Nagpur alone number of corona deaths are more in the age group of 41 to 80. Till now in city, 33 persons between the age group of 41- 50 years, 36 passed away were in the age group of 51-60 years, 43 persons those died were between the age group of 61- 70 and 31 were in the age group of 71-80. It means total 69% deaths reported in 51 years and above age group and only one death in the age group up to 20 years. Most of them had all types of ailments and coronavirus aggravated their problems.
