After the remarkable work done the in various fields is bringing about a radical change in the water sector in state, the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority (MWRRA) Â declared as the Best Water Resources Regulatory Authority in the country for year 2019. This is for the second time in a row that MWRRA has been adjudged for its stellar role in regulating water resources in the country. An Authority was setup through Act of 2005 for equitable and sustainable distribution and management of available water resources in the State. The authority regulates the availability of surface water resources in the State as well as the ground water. MWRRA is the first authority in the country to receive the first prize for second time in a row.
The Water Resources Regulatory Authority in Maharashtra is all about water management, equal distribution of water, stopping water wastage and working in co-ordinated allocation. The award ceremony will be conducted wherein Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Water Power Minister Gajendra singh Shekhawat will give away the award on November 11 and 12 in a virtual ceremony. The then President of MWRRA KP Bakshi (now retired), then member (Engineering) Vinay Kulkarni (now retired), Existing Member (Economics) Dr S T Sangole worked in the field of water regulation leading to recognition.
The Authority has taken the lead in the areas of economical use of water, reuse, waste water management and water recharge. The authority in Maharashtra has passed important orders from time to time after the Supreme Court clarified that the right to water is a constitutional right as a fundamental right to life.
