After the railway administration decided to give contract to a private company for pick up and drop of passengers’ luggage from their doorstep, the porters at Nagpur Railway Station expressed their displeasure regarding this move. They have warned of severe agitation if the railway administration does not rescind its decision. As per information, 145 porters are working at Nagpur Railway station in two shifts. Most of these porters returned to their villages after railway administration stopped run of many trains due to lockdown.
However, after railway started selected trains, some of these porters returned to Nagpur with the expectation that they would get work. However, they were disappointed as passengers stopped hiring their services for the fear of Covid-19 transmission. They have submitted a memorandum to the railway administration and alleged that if the luggage is stolen from the point of pick up to the compartment, then porters would be held responsible for the theft. Hence, the decision is not acceptable to them. As per the new arrangement the private company would pick up the luggage from the doorstep of the passengers and hand it over to the porters at railway station for further loading in their compartment.
