Recently OCHRI commissioned and upgraded their CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department) which is the backbone of any hospital to maintain sterility of all instruments.
Highlighting this acquisition; Dr. Usha Nair- RNHPL Director stated that there are many different varieties of sterilization used in medical industry.
The most common ones are steam sterilization and ETO sterilization. The other ways are like hot air oven sterilization, low temperature steam sterilization, formaldehyde sterilization, irradiation technique and sporicidal chemicals method for sterilization. Each of the process is different in the method and materials used but purpose remains the same.
Dr. Smita Harkare- OCHRI Operation Theatre Complex Section Coordinator added that the major difference between the steam sterilizer and the ETO sterilizer is the purpose of utility. The steam sterilizers are used for those equipment’s, which can tolerate the inference of steam. The ETO sterilization is like dry sterilization used to sterilize those devices operated with electricity and equipment’s wrapped with plastic lining. This helps to maintain the quality and condition of surgical equipment’s also increases the durability.
Sr. Nisha Ashok- OCHRI OT Section Supervisor mentioned that today with advanced technology of sterilization, differences between different techniques are clearly understood, considered and implemented respectively at OCHRI CSSD Division.
Dr. Anup Marar – OCHRI Director concluded that considering patient safety, priorities, multi speciality requirements and high volume of work; OCHRI went ahead with procurement of Fully Automatic High pressure and High Speed Single Door Sterilizer that combines both Steam and ETO.
Sr Rahel Patrange- OCHRI Infection Control Nurse quoted that each day millions of medical procedures are performed in healthcare facilities worldwide, with caregivers and patients relying on the availability and use of a wide range of supplies, instruments and equipment. These devices must be properly cleaned, disinfected and/or sterilized, inspected for quality to ensure good working condition, and available at the point of care. In the absence of proper handling, processing and storage, these devices may be contaminated and compromise quality patient care. Thus central sterile supply department (CSSD) plays a key role in providing the items required to deliver quality patient care.
