Divisional Commissioner Dr Sanjeev Kumar has notified the election programme for choosing the next Mayor who will be from open category. While District Collector Ravindra Thakare will preside over the election meeting of general body slated for January 5 at Suresh Bhat auditorium. Another important point of programme is that the general body meeting would be held in physical presence of corporators as holding the election on-line might be technically challenging owing to connectivity issues. Due to COVID-19 pandemic State Government had directed all meetings at civic body to switch over to on-line media.
Meanwhile as per the programme, nominations to Mayor and that of Deputy Mayor stars from December 30, 2020. Nominations would have to be submitted by 3 pm while special meeting to elect Mayor and Deputy Mayor (Unreserved) is on January 5 at 11 am. BJP has yet not disclosed the name of its Deputy Mayor nominee. Similarly, Opposition block too has not stated if they are going to force contest, which seems unlikely given the standing of Tiwari. The scrutiny of the nominations will take place at the time of general body meeting at 11 am and withdrawal of nominations post announcement by presiding officer is possible within 15 minutes. In case there is only one nomination for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor then no election would be necessitated. Same programme is also listed for the election of Deputy Mayor by the Divisional Commissioner. The corporators have been directed to carry their respective I-cards during the meeting and observe COVID-19 protocol.
