City’s lone international boxer Alfiya Pathan once again brought laurels to the country by clinching gold medal in 30th Adriatic Pearl in Budva, Montenegro (South East Europe).
This is season’s first international event and Alfiya pocketed India’s first gold medal when she defeated Moldova’s Daria Kozorev for the gold medal match in the women’s 81kg-plus weight category on Friday night.
In the final she met with one of the best European heavyweight but Alfiya did great job in the bout. She never stopped attacking her opponent and won the tough contest continuing her successful international career.
Earlier Alfiya won the title at the Fujairah 2018 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Chammpionship and then she joined to the youth age group in January 2020.Earlier Alfiya a daughter of  constable Akram Khan won the bronze medal in the 80+ kg category at the 3rd Nations Cup International Boxing Championship in Serbia.Alfiya’s local coach Ganesh Purohit has expressed happiness over Alfiya’s success.
” I am happy that she won gold medal on international event but our main target is selection for AIBA Youth World Championship to be held at Poland  between April 10 and 24. Alfiya is strong contender for the berth in the Indian team as she is currently top ranked boxer in her weight category in India”. said Purohit.
The BFI will select top 4-6 ranked players from each weight category for the camp before the trails to be held by February-end.
