Fuel prices are once again increasing and the prices of petrol and diesel have registered new highs. On Monday, with a hike 25 paise petrol price went up to a level of Rs 97.69 per liter while diesel price gained 34 paise to reach Rs 87.67 per liter mark. These are the new highs for petrol and diesel. On Sunday petrol was at Rs 97.44 per liter while diesel was at Rs 87.33 per liter. It is important to note that the fuel prices are going up even as fuel consumption in the city has dipped by an unimaginable quantity.
Consumption of petrol and diesel in the city has dipped by about 80-85 per cent ever since the restrictions came into effect. There are 94 petrol pumps in the city which together used to sell roughly 5 lakh litres of petrol and 1.5 lakh litres of diesel per day before the new restriction were brought in. But with the lockdown in place, the consumption of petrol has slipped to 80,000 to 90,000 litres per day while diesel consumption came down to a level of only 15,000 to 20,000 litres per day.
