Further research needed: Expert
The rough estimate indicates that 35 per cent of Covid 19 infected persons have developed some or the other psychological or psychiatric problems.
Nagpur branch of Indian Psychiatrists Society is carrying out study on the effect of these effects. Secretary of Nagpur Psychiatrists Society Dr Shrikant Nimbhorkar stated that anxiety disorder is a major issue with the patient. It may be born out of fear psychois. He is getting around 25 such patients in a month.
The problems include continuous fear of getting infected by Corona virus. Those who have already suffered show behavioural changes. Most of them required hospitalisation for Covid infection treatment. A few have also shown violent behaviour and required hospitalisation again for this behavioural change.
Noted psychiatrist Dr Nikhil Pande also supported this view. He stated that more severe changes in behaviour were of patients who were given steroids during Covid treatment.
Irritability, Depression, abnormal behaviour in routine work etc are being observed.
It has not been proved that the psychological issues are born out of drugs given during Covid treatment. The side-effects of the drugs used for treatment so far known are related to other streams of medical sciences. Fluctuation in blood sugar, nauseatic feeling, weakness etc are common effects.
Dr Nimbhorkar stated that those already under psychiatric treatment are suggested not to consume psychiatric treatment drugs, after vaccination. The effect lasts for a few days, as drugs used are related to thinning of blood.
Research in this field is in infancy stage. More details about side-effects of drugs used for Covid treatment, impact of combination of drugs used with those used by a psychiatrist etc, could be known at a later stage.
Psychoneuratic effects will also be studied now. The present observations are only symptom based, as the new Corona virus is of recent origin.
