In a significant step, to provide relif to consumers the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) will install smart meters on an experimental basis for domestic consumers.
The initiative will be initially launched in metropolitan cities such as Mumbai suburban, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad.
State energy minister Nitin Raut on Tuesday took a decision at a meeting and instructed the department to install smart meters in urban areas initially.
The meters will work like a prepaid and post-paid mobile SIM cards. Consumers can monitor electricity usage daily. It will help save electricity and consumers need not to stand in queues to pay bills.
There will not be theft of electricity, as if someone tries to steal power by tampering with meters, a alert will be sent to the server.
