First to take such a step in the country
Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, probably, is the first University in the country, which not only has waived part of its fees, but also has proposed health and life insurance of all its students.
The proposals for insurance of about 3.50 lakh students, has been invited from insurance companies. Although exact number of bidding companies was not disclosed by the University authorities, the last date of submission of the proposal was July 26.
The University has proposed to grant contract to the selected agency for a period of five years. The students will have an insurance of Rs 5 lakh each. The step has been taken in view of large number of deaths reported during the Covid 19 second wave. The University has jurisdiction over four districts Bhandara, Gondia, Wardha, besides Nagpur. Majority of the area covered by the University is rural and tribal dominated. Â
A large number of students faced problems of connectivity, access to computers or Smart Phones. However, the last two examinations were conducted on-line successfully by the University. With concession in fees and now life and health insurance is a huge relief to the students and their parents. It appears that the University is gearing up to conduct off-line classes and examinations very soon.
The proposals for insurance of all the students of the University is likely to be finalized in the next few days.
