Indian-origin Rishi Sunak will be the new British Prime Minister, as the only rival Penny Mordaunt has withdrawn from the contest. Sunak was supported by 200 MPs, while Penny got support of only 26. Conservative Party members selected Sunak as their leader.
Sunak is likely to take oath on October 28 and announce his ministry the next day.
On Monday around 5.30 pm (Indian time) Penny Mordent supporter George Freeman told the media that Penny has failed to get support of at least 100 MPs. Even if she had garnered support of 100, the path ahead for her was very difficult. Her supporters asked her to honourably withdraw from the contest, which would send better message in the party.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who withdrew from the contest earlier, had stated that he has support of only 60 MPs. He also stated that he and his supporters would co-operate with the elected Prime Minister.\
Rishi Sunak will be the first Indian-origin to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
