Frustrated by ditches on roads posing serious threats to commuters, frequent traffic jams at various places, choking sewer lines and overflowing drains, residents of Nagpur have started vending their emotions publicly. A board on a prominent street is an indication.
Nagpur Municipal Corporation is spending crores of rupees in the ‘beautification’ of the city for the coming G-20 meeting to be held in the city in the month of March. Everyone feels that the city should be properly decorated to welcome international guests. However, the local people cannot be compelled to face hardships for the guests.
It was expected that the beautification work would help in improving the condition of the city. The traffic would be smooth on properly laid roads. The city roads will be properly illuminated and the roadside plants will be trimmed to avoid any difficulty for moving vehicles.
Painting road dividers and flyovers and buildings without looking at the basic amenities for the local residents is not expected in the name of beautification.
The board with a small slogan displayed publicly is an indication of growing frustration among the local residents. With about a month remaining for the G-20 meeting, the authorities are expected to wake up and take proper measures to avoid inconvenience caused to the people.
