Laxminarayan Institute of Technology is likely to be fully State Government University from the next academic session – 2023-24. With the announcement by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, drafting of the separate Act for the LIT University is expected to begin soon.
Last year the State Government made a similar attempt for the College of Engineering, Pune. The institutions of repute, which have completed at least 50 years, may be elevated as State Universities within a short period. KIT is an over 80 years old institution and has global recognition.
The director of LIT Dr. Raju Mankar is hopeful that the procedure will be completed so that the students from the next academic session could be admitted to LIT University. The present students will graduate under the RTM Nagpur University.
LIT is spread over a land of about 78 acres. The Government had granted Rs. 10 crore each twice for the development of this institute. The exact allocation in the present budget, announced by Fadnavis on Thursday, is not known. The Institute had demanded Rs. 50 crores for its development. The alumni association of LIT also contributed a huge amount to its development.
