Communal riots erupted in Nandurbar around midnight on Tuesday, following an inter-religion marriage. At least 27 people including the groom were arrested. An offence has been registered on Wednesday.
Police received information about heavy stone pelting in Alisahab Mohalla around 11.15 pm. Police personnel rushed to the spot and found about 150 people pelting stones. The vehicles in the area and window panes of some houses were damaged. The mob also attacked police personnel. Some policemen including PI Kirankumar Khedkar were injured.
The uncontrolled mob damaged several vehicles and also damaged the electric meter to sever the power supply. Heaps of stones, bricks, and glass bottles were seen on the spot. PSI Sagar Bhagwantrao Aher of Ekta Police Station sought additional police force and started a cane charge to control the rioters. Shells of tear gas were burst as the mob could not be controlled.
The youth who performed inter-religion marriage was also arrested along with 27 others. Offences relating to riots have been registered against about 200 people.
