A massive campaign is being carried out by the litterateurs to demand classical language status for Marathi.
Litterateurs and writers of Maharashtra are demanding that Marathi should be given this status before Maharashtra Day on May 1 otherwise they will protest by wearing black bands on Maharashtra Day.
The Centre has avoided giving Marathi the status of classical language. The letter in this regard has been recently sent to the union cultural affairs minister by Mar- athi Bhasha and Boli Bhasha Samvardhan Samiti of Premanand Gajvi, the former president of Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan.
